Gem Reference › Singapore Gem Labs
Who tests, who certifies, who teaches — every gem laboratory in Singapore, profiled
Gemmology in Singapore is served by two kinds of institutions. Laboratories test, identify and value stones — jewellers, insurers and collectors rely on their reports. Schools teach gemmology — how professionals look at stones, what treatments mean, and how instruments reach an identification. This guide, maintained by the gemmology faculty of the Jewellery Design & Management International School (JDMIS), profiles every significant Singapore gem laboratory and maps the education landscape, so you know who does what before you pay for a report or a course.

A gem lab answers three questions about a stone: what is it (identification), has it been treated (enhancement detection — heating, irradiation, polymer impregnation, fracture filling), and sometimes where did it come from (origin determination, offered for a few stone families by major international labs). Singapore's laboratories mostly serve identification and certification for the jewellery trade — jadeite is a local specialisation you will not find in most Western labs — plus valuation for insurance and estates.
Three pathways exist in Singapore. Qualification pathways: GIA's Graduate Gemologist (American) and Gem-A's Foundation (British, taught locally by FEGRI) suit people who need a recognised credential. Skills pathways: JDMIS's gemmology programmes are trade-oriented — Gemmology: Secrets of the Gem & Jewellery Trade (GT100) covers the stones and trade practices of this region, and Gem Identification Methods (GT200) teaches hands-on instrument work. Laboratory short courses: several labs named above run one-day introductions. Ask any school the same three questions: how many real stones will I handle, which instruments will I use, and does the syllabus cover the treatments and materials sold in Southeast Asia?
